PANS and PANDAS: Understanding the Sudden Changes Happening Beneath the Surface

One day your child seems completely fine. Then almost overnight, everything changes.

Maybe they suddenly begin struggling with severe anxiety, emotional outbursts, obsessive thoughts, rage episodes, tics, food restrictions, sleep struggles, or fears that seem to appear out of nowhere. Perhaps school suddenly becomes difficult, your child becomes unusually sensitive or withdrawn, or it feels like their entire personality shifted overnight.

For many families navigating PANS or PANDAS, this experience can feel heartbreaking, confusing, and incredibly isolating. Parents often say things like, “It felt like I lost my child overnight.”

At Pacific Pointe Chiropractic, we know how overwhelming these sudden neurological and behavioral changes can feel. We also know many parents are desperately searching for answers and support while trying to help their child feel safe, calm, and regulated again.

While every child’s journey is unique, understanding the nervous system and the stress and inflammation affecting it can often help families finally begin connecting the dots.

What Are PANS and PANDAS?

PANS stands for Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome.

PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections.

Both conditions involve a sudden onset of neurological, behavioral, emotional, and sensory changes in children.

The biggest difference between the two is that PANDAS is specifically connected to a streptococcal infection such as strep throat, while PANS may be triggered by a variety of infections, immune challenges, inflammation, toxins, or environmental stressors.

What makes these conditions especially alarming is how quickly symptoms can appear. Parents often remember the exact day or even hour things changed.

Children with PANS or PANDAS may suddenly experience:

  • Severe anxiety or separation anxiety
  • OCD type behaviors or intrusive thoughts
  • Tics or unusual movements
  • Emotional outbursts, aggression, or rage
  • Mood swings or depression
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Bed wetting or urinary frequency
  • Difficulty concentrating or sudden decline in school performance
  • Regression in behavior or development
  • Restrictive eating or food fears
  • Increased clinginess or emotional dysregulation
  • Trouble with memory, processing, or focus

In some cases, symptoms become so intense that families feel like they no longer recognize their child.

Why Does It Happen So Suddenly?

Research surrounding PANS and PANDAS continues to evolve, but many experts believe these conditions involve an abnormal immune and inflammatory response that affects the brain and nervous system.

In PANDAS specifically, the immune system may react to a streptococcal infection in a way that creates inflammation affecting areas of the brain connected to emotions, behavior, movement, and regulation.

From a neurological perspective, many children with PANS and PANDAS are also stuck in a heightened fight or flight state. Their nervous systems become overwhelmed and dysregulated, making it incredibly difficult for the brain and body to process stress appropriately.

This is often why families notice symptoms worsen after illness, stress, lack of sleep, sensory overload, or additional immune challenges.

The Nervous System Connection

One of the most important things parents can understand is that these behaviors are not simply “bad behavior” or parenting problems.

Children struggling with PANS and PANDAS are often dealing with profound nervous system dysregulation.

When the nervous system becomes overwhelmed and stuck in stress mode, children can struggle with emotional regulation, sleep, digestion, immune function, focus, behavior, and sensory processing. Their brains and bodies are essentially operating in survival mode.

This is where many families begin looking deeper into neurological health and nervous system regulation.

At Pacific Pointe Chiropractic, our focus is on supporting and regulating the nervous system through neurologically focused chiropractic care. Using advanced INSiGHT Scans, we are able to look at how the nervous system is functioning and adapting to stress beneath the surface.

These noninvasive scans help us evaluate areas such as:

  • Stress and tension patterns within the nervous system
  • How well the body is adapting to stress
  • Balance within the autonomic nervous system
  • Areas where the body may be stuck in fight or flight

For many families, this provides a missing piece of the puzzle and helps them better understand what may be happening neurologically beneath the surface.

Common Signs Families Notice Before the Sudden Onset

Many parents report noticing subtle nervous system challenges long before the sudden onset occurred.

Some children may have previously struggled with:

  • Chronic ear infections
  • Sensory challenges
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep struggles
  • dysregulation
  • ADHD like behaviors
  • Frequent illnesses
  • Digestive issues
  • Motor coordination difficulties
  • Difficulty calming down
  • Frequent meltdowns or emotional overwhelm

Then after an infection, illness, or stressful event, symptoms intensify dramatically and seemingly overnight.

This “perfect storm” effect is something many families experience with PANS and PANDAS.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

One of the hardest parts for many families is feeling like they are constantly chasing symptoms.

A child may be struggling emotionally, behaviorally, neurologically, and physically all at once. Parents are often trying everything they can while feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and desperate for answers.

At Pacific Pointe Chiropractic, we believe it is important to look beyond the symptoms and ask a deeper question:

Why is the nervous system struggling to regulate and adapt in the first place?

When the nervous system is overwhelmed, stressed, and stuck in survival mode, it can affect nearly every aspect of a child’s health and development.

This is why supporting nervous system regulation can play such an important role in helping children feel calmer, more regulated, and more adaptable.

A Story We Hear Far Too Often

We have worked with families who describe watching their child go from happy and thriving to anxious, overwhelmed, emotionally reactive, and disconnected almost overnight.

One mom shared that her child suddenly became terrified to leave her side, stopped sleeping through the night, and developed behaviors that felt completely unlike him. After months of searching for answers, she said the hardest part was feeling like nobody truly understood what her family was going through.

Stories like these are why we are so passionate about helping families understand the neurological side of healing and regulation.

Supporting the Body Naturally

There is no one size fits all approach for children with PANS or PANDAS, and every child’s healthcare decisions should always be made with a trusted healthcare team.

However, many families are seeking ways to support the nervous system naturally alongside other care approaches.

By helping the nervous system shift out of chronic stress and fight or flight mode, the body is often better able to regulate, heal, adapt, and function the way it was designed to.

Our goal is always to create a safe, calming, supportive environment where children and parents alike feel seen, heard, and cared for.

Hope for Families

If your child has been struggling with sudden behavioral, emotional, sensory, or neurological changes, please know you are not alone.

PANS and PANDAS can feel incredibly overwhelming, but there is hope. Many families begin seeing positive changes once they start understanding the nervous system and supporting the body from a neurological perspective.

Healing is rarely linear, and every child’s journey is unique, but children are incredibly resilient when given the right support.

At Pacific Pointe Chiropractic, we are passionate about helping families find answers, feel supported, and better understand what may be happening beneath the surface.

If you have questions about how neurologically focused chiropractic care may help support your child’s nervous system, our team would be honored to walk alongside your family.
