The Neurological Perspective on Constipation

Constipation can feel incredibly frustrating for families.

You try the water, the fiber, the magnesium, the probiotics, the smoothies, the diet changes, and sometimes even medications… yet your child is still struggling. Days go by without a bowel movement. Their belly hurts. They become uncomfortable, emotional, irritable, or exhausted. And as a parent, it can feel heartbreaking watching your child struggle while still not having clear answers.

At Pacific Pointe Chiropractic, we want families to know something important.

Constipation is often more than just a digestive issue.

Many times, it is actually connected to how the nervous system is functioning.

The nervous system controls and coordinates every single function in the body, including digestion, gut motility, elimination, and the ability to properly relax into a healthy bowel movement. When the nervous system becomes stressed, overwhelmed, or stuck in a constant fight or flight state, the digestive system is often one of the first places we begin to see signs.

That is why so many children struggling with constipation are also dealing with things like sensory challenges, anxiety, sleep issues, emotional dysregulation, ADHD, chronic tension, reflux, or immune challenges. These issues are often connected through the nervous system.

Why Constipation Is Often Neurological

Most conventional approaches focus only on helping the child “go.”

While stool softeners, laxatives, magnesium, fiber, and dietary changes may provide temporary relief, they often do not address why the body is struggling to regulate digestion in the first place.

The digestive system is heavily controlled by the autonomic nervous system, especially the parasympathetic “rest and digest” branch. When a child’s body is stuck in stress physiology for long periods of time, digestion slows down significantly.

Instead of focusing energy on digestion and elimination, the body shifts into protection mode.

This can lead to:

  • Slower gut motility
  • Difficulty relaxing for bowel movements
  • Increased abdominal tension
  • Chronic withholding patterns
  • Belly discomfort and bloating
  • Irregular or painful stools
  • Emotional stress surrounding toileting

One of the biggest players in this process is the vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve is responsible for helping regulate digestion, gut motility, inflammation, and communication between the brain and the gut. When the vagus nerve is under stress or not functioning properly, digestion can become sluggish and dysregulated.

This is why we often see constipation connected to nervous system dysregulation.

The Gut and Brain Are Deeply Connected

Many parents are surprised to learn how connected the brain and gut truly are.

The gut is constantly communicating with the brain through the nervous system. When the nervous system becomes overwhelmed from stress, birth trauma, physical tension, emotional stressors, illness, or developmental challenges, the digestive system can begin to struggle.

This is especially common in children who:

  • Have sensory sensitivities
  • Experienced a stressful or traumatic birth
  • Struggle with anxiety or emotional regulation
  • Have ADHD or autism
  • Tend to be constantly “on the go”
  • Have difficulty calming or relaxing
  • Have chronic tension patterns in their body

We often tell parents that a child cannot fully heal in a body that constantly feels stressed and overwhelmed.

The body must feel safe enough to regulate.

And when regulation improves, digestion often improves too.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

At Pacific Pointe Chiropractic, we take a neurologically focused approach.

Instead of only asking what symptoms your child has, we ask why the nervous system may be struggling to regulate in the first place.

That is why we utilize INSiGHT Scans as part of our initial evaluation process. These scans help us look deeper into how your child’s nervous system is functioning and adapting to stress.

These scans are safe, gentle, and completely noninvasive.

They help us assess:

  • Areas of stress and tension within the nervous system
  • How well the body is adapting to stress
  • Patterns of nervous system imbalance
  • Whether the body is stuck in fight or flight mode

For many parents, this is the first time they finally feel like they are getting answers that make sense.

Bennett’s Story

constipation treatment in San Clemente, CA

One of our little practice members, Bennett, came into the office struggling with severe constipation and withholding behaviors that had become incredibly stressful for both him and his family.

Mom shared that going to the bathroom had become painful and emotional for him. He was uncomfortable often, had very low energy, and was becoming more irritable and dysregulated throughout the day. Like many families, they had already tried multiple approaches to help support his digestion, but nothing seemed to create lasting changes.

Along with the constipation, Mom also noticed that Bennett’s body constantly seemed tense and overwhelmed.

When we performed his neurological scans, we saw significant stress patterns within his nervous system, showing that his body was struggling to properly regulate and adapt.

As Bennett continued with neurologically focused care, Mom began noticing incredible changes.

His bowel movements became more regular and much less stressful.

He stopped experiencing pain while going to the bathroom.

His energy improved significantly.

He became happier, more playful, and more emotionally regulated.

If you look at Bennett’s scans above, you can actually see the difference in how his nervous system was functioning.

On the left was his scan when he first came into our office showing significant stress and dysregulation within his nervous system. On the right was his scan after receiving neurologically focused care and beginning to regulate more effectively.

Mom shared that it finally felt like his body was calming down instead of constantly fighting against itself.

Stories like Bennett’s are why we are so passionate about helping families understand the nervous system connection behind chronic constipation and other challenges many children face.

Supporting the Body Naturally

Our goal is never to force the body to function.

Our goal is to help the body regulate and heal the way it was designed to.

Neurologically focused chiropractic care is designed to support healthy communication between the brain and body by addressing areas of stress and tension within the nervous system.

When the nervous system is able to shift out of stress mode and into a more regulated state, many children begin experiencing improvements in:

  • Digestion
  • Bowel regularity
  • Sleep
  • Emotional regulation
  • Focus and attention
  • Sensory processing
  • Immune function
  • Overall adaptability

Every child is different, and healing is never one size fits all.

But time and time again, we see that when the nervous system begins functioning better, the body often begins functioning better too.
