Seizures & Epilepsy in Children

Looking Beyond the Symptoms and Supporting the Nervous System Naturally

Hearing the word “seizure” connected to your child can feel incredibly overwhelming. For many parents, it can bring fear, uncertainty, and a million unanswered questions all at once. Whether your child has experienced a single seizure, has recently been diagnosed with epilepsy, or you are simply searching for answers after noticing concerning symptoms, please know you are not alone.

At Pacific Pointe Chiropractic, we know how scary and emotional these moments can be for families. We also understand how frustrating it can feel when you are searching for deeper answers beyond simply managing symptoms. Our goal is always to help parents better understand what may be happening inside their child’s nervous system and support the body in functioning as well as possible.

While seizures and epilepsy can have many different causes and presentations, one thing remains true: the nervous system plays a central role in everything the body does.

What Is a Seizure?

A seizure happens when there is a sudden burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Because the brain controls communication throughout the entire body, this electrical disruption can create a wide range of symptoms depending on which areas of the brain are involved.

Some seizures are very noticeable and involve shaking or convulsions, while others can be much more subtle and difficult to recognize.

Symptoms of seizures in children may include:

  • Sudden shaking or jerking movements
  • Staring spells or appearing “zoned out”
  • Loss of awareness or responsiveness
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Repetitive movements
  • Sudden falls
  • Confusion afterward
  • Temporary breathing changes
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Extreme fatigue after an episode

In some children, seizures happen only once. In others, they may occur repeatedly and eventually lead to a diagnosis of epilepsy.

What Is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological condition involving recurrent seizures. A child is typically diagnosed with epilepsy after experiencing two or more unprovoked seizures.

There are many different types of epilepsy, and every child’s experience can look different. Some children may outgrow seizures over time, while others may require long term support and monitoring.

For parents, one of the hardest parts is often not knowing why the seizures are happening in the first place.

What Causes Seizures?

Seizures can happen for many different reasons, and sometimes there is not one single clear answer. In many cases, multiple stressors may be affecting the nervous system at the same time.

Some possible contributing factors include:

  • Birth stress or birth trauma
  • Head injuries or concussions
  • High fevers
  • Nervous system inflammation
  • Genetic factors
  • Brain injuries or structural changes
  • Infections
  • Toxin exposure
  • Chronic stress on the nervous system
  • Neurological dysregulation

At Pacific Pointe Chiropractic, we often explain that the nervous system acts like the body’s master communication system. When the nervous system becomes overwhelmed, stressed, or stuck in a constant state of dysregulation, the body may have a more difficult time adapting and functioning properly.

This does not mean chiropractic care “treats” epilepsy or seizures. However, many families are searching for ways to better support nervous system regulation and overall neurological function alongside their child’s medical care.

The Nervous System Connection

The brain and body are constantly communicating through the nervous system. When communication becomes disrupted, the body may struggle to regulate stress, coordination, sleep, digestion, emotions, immune function, and more.

Many children struggling with seizures or epilepsy may also experience challenges like:

  • Sensory struggles
  • Anxiety or emotional dysregulation
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Developmental delays
  • Focus and attention challenges
  • Digestive issues
  • Chronic tension patterns in the body

This is why we focus so heavily on the health and function of the nervous system as a whole.

Our office uses advanced neurological scans called INSiGHT Scans to help evaluate how the nervous system is adapting and functioning. These noninvasive scans can help us better understand patterns of stress and dysregulation within the body.

A Hope Filled Story

One of the most meaningful parts of what we do is walking alongside families who have often been searching for answers for a very long time.

We have cared for children whose parents felt exhausted, scared, and unsure of what else to do after navigating neurological challenges for months or even years. Many families share that they simply wanted their child to feel calmer, sleep better, regulate easier, or have a better quality of life overall.

While every child’s healing journey is different, parents often tell us they notice improvements in areas such as:

  • Better sleep
  • Improved emotional regulation
  • More calmness and connection
  • Better focus and engagement
  • Less tension throughout the body
  • Improved overall adaptability and resilience

For many parents, simply seeing their child’s nervous system begin to settle and regulate more consistently can feel incredibly encouraging.

At Pacific Pointe Chiropractic, our approach is gentle, neurologically focused, and personalized to each child.

We begin by listening carefully to your story, understanding your concerns, and evaluating how your child’s nervous system may be functioning beneath the surface. From there, we create a customized care plan focused on helping the nervous system improve communication, adaptability, and regulation.

Our goal is never to simply chase symptoms. We want to help support the foundation of health by focusing on the nervous system itself.
